Default Unmount SD card ?

Its tell you to unmount the SD card for safe removal
What does that actually mean ?
What does it do to the SD card?
Why do you need to do it? ( i will do it anyway but just incase im on a game show and this is the million dollar question i will get it right )

Edit: Well i looked up the answer on the android forums but this is the 1st time i didnt get the answer here. For those like me who didnt know. People wrote that it like shutting down your computer. You just dont push the power button you have to go to start , power down. That is how there explained it. Its better to do that to remove the SD card.
