Default flashing clockworkmod recovery

wen i am trying to flash clockwork recovery, i get 'an error has occured while flashing your recovery'. i am using my evo for internet so maybe thats the problem or weak internet connection to phone? then after i am able to flash recovery to need to do a "nandroid" back up. i read that i do a nandroid backup from my rom manager but where? is nandroid just slang for 'back up'? i have no custom roms or kernals, so what am i backing up, contacts, apps etc?

Your backing up your current rom in case something happens you have something to revert back to. Like if you get stuck in a bootloop.
Yes, nandroid is basically your backed up roms.

Rom manager is an app you download in the market. If you download it, choose "backup current ROM". I would also recommend using Amon RA Recovery b/c there have been problems with ClockworkMod not completely wiping everything it should. If you choose to use rom manager, you can flash Amon RA with that, or just google it to install it by itself. You can also to a nandroid backup by booting into recovery (with phone off, hold power and volume down button), but I believe you need a custom recovery first, but im not sure.

Uglykid, I was rooted, but the phone I had at the time had issues so I had to get a new phone. I didn't reroot at first mostly because I thought I had a refurb phone and wanted to test it out for a few before rooting. I have since discovered that I did in fact get a new phone and not a refurb...Second reason for not currently being rooted is my software version isn't rootable with Unrevoked yet. In all honesty, I have actually kinda enjoyed not being rooted in some ways. Rooting takes lots of time, reading, flashing, and researching to keep up and current. I enjoy all that stuff and its great fun, but its nice to just use my phone as well and not have to always be doing backups and tweaking.
I personally totally think rooting is worth the effort...

I think ClockworkMod sucks. I know it wasn't wiping my schnizzle. Amon RA is for sure the way to go.

Terminology
Quote:
"Nandroid
A set of tools that will enable anyone who has root on their Android device to make FULL system backups, in case something goes wrong or you want to try out that new experimental ROM/theme. Nandroid will backup (and restore) /system, /data, /cache, and /boot partitions."
How to: Nandroid Backup

The reason why I "so instantly request" that people read the stickied posts is because they usually don't, even when they say they did. They are there for a reason, and almost all of the information most people need to get started is readily available in the stickied posts (which is why they are stickied in the first place) and cut down on redundant questions/posts.

Again, I would recommend you read the stickied posts, and if you have already done so, read them more carefully. Start with this one: About Rooting - Read this first before proceeding. Know what you are doing before you do it to avoid problems later.

Rooting is not for everyone. If you can't grasp the basic terminology, I would suggest that rooting is not for you.

No one is calling anyone a dumbass...or is it implied. Lazy maybe. I think the point is, that people get one here daily and don't bother to learn even the basics of rooting. They just get one, have one post, and it basically asks "How do I root my phone?" Some people on here see it constantly even tho it might be the first time you post it. Its not the first time its been asked and honestly it gets old.
If you read and know the basic concepts, like at least what version your phone is to even know if you can root at this time, well thats at least a start. If you watch the videos and read the stickies, the actual basic rooting process could not be any easier. When you go to start flashing different roms, that's when it gets a little trickier.
People are here to help. Some like Roblin can pretty much answer anything, but at the same time you have to put in a little effort of your own. But I don't think anyone is being called or implied as being a dumbass...
