Has anyone set up to conduct an download/upload speed test of the 3g/4g connections?  There are a lot of speed test websites out there that profess to give you your personal download and upload speeds - most of them are hawking their own internet service.

I think I have a pretty good internet connection, however most of my work is done on my laptop which is a few years old and is 802.11g so my wireless download speeds are limited.

I've tried several, most recently:
http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/06/att-adds-iphone-tethering-kills-unlimited-data-for-ipad-smartphones

And my speed is "average" - but I suspect that's because I'm wireless and not wired.

Maybe there ought to be a thread that compares observed speeds on both 3g and 4g networks?

Should we agree on a common measurement site?

Does anyone have other suggestions?

I'd like to know how my connection speed compares to what others are seeing - both over the 3g/4g network and over other (dsl, cable, satellite, ...?) connections.

We're within 2 days of having actual, hands-on experience!!!   Hah!

I believe speedtest.net is the agreed upon standard.  Every review I have seen uses this to gauge the speed.  It may even be an app on the phone (but i'm not sure).

I will be more than happy to share my 4G experience with you guys as soon as I get the phone.  I am very close to Philly so I should get a nice signal.

According to the current Sprint coverage map, I'm right across the highway from one of their new 4G towers in Houston (Houston Galleria).  I will certainly post results once I have "hands-on".

I hope we get some corroboration of the speed tests.  If a specific speed test comes as a pre-installed app, I confess to some skepticism about its validity vs. being packaged because it gives good results.  But an active dialog here will help sort all of that out.

Even if it does come with a pre-installed app, tests can still be ran using speedtest on the browser.

If you go to speedtest.net and click "world results" at the top and then browse to a 4G city, you can see what speeds clearwire users are getting (if clearwire is in the top 10):

Henderson: 4.07 Mbps
North Las Vegas: 3.82 Mbps
Salem: 5.19 Mbps
Tacoma: 3.41 Mbps
Everett: 2.89 Mbps
Boise: 3.54 Mbps
San Antonio: 7.95 Mbps
Schaumburg: 4.38 Mbps
Marietta: 5.03 Mbps
Duluth: 4.03 Mbps
Lawrenceville: 4.82 Mbps

I think we should have a topic that shows what everyones speed tests are showing.  Feel free to post screen shots.  Also, give an approximate location...time of day...and 4G-3G #of bars etc...

Here is one from Camden NJ at 8:30 with 1 bar of 4G coverage

Get "Shoot Me" from the Market.  It says it wont work on a non-rooted phone, but it works on the Evo.

I can't get my EVO until mid July....but I went in and played with it yesterday...in 3g.  Very impressed with the improved 3g speed over my Ore.  Web pages and photos loaded crazy fast.
