Question: Are app and process killers necessary to save battery life?
Yes, definitely
No, android does it by itself.
Doesn't make any real difference.

I think task killers are bad because Google says they are... they should know Shocked

Depends on what it does. If it "manages" apps/tasks by killing them, then yes. If its something like Battery Booster (which many of us use and recommend, then no.
I took a look in the market and there are two apps calling themselves "Battery Booster" listed from two different companies... which is the one you recommend? Neither one seems to have particularly glowing reviews.

Just yesterday I got my Evo, and as soon as the rep (who happened to be the store manager) took it out of the box, he installed a task killer.

Tonight, I went to my local Sprint store to have them check the battery, as the life was horrible. When the tech took my phone, the first thing he did was uninstall the task killer, saying that it was doing my battery more harm then good. So I guess we will see tomorrow and compare.

UPDATE:

I can say that I havent noticed a huge difference in battery life, but the phone seems to run a bit smoother without the task killer.

Before Khassy does it, I should let you know that it is preferred that you update (modify) your post, rather than post back to back posts.

I am so glad I ordered both of our Evos on the web, so no one could mess with them...but me. wink

My phone does fine with a task killer; I just make sure I know exactly what I can and should kill, and that which I shouldn't.

I don't know anyone else who's Evo can last all day under heavy use without an oversized battery, or idle 4 days if its left to sit, so I think I'll keep doing what I'm doing.

The problem with statements like that are whats heavy use, my heavy use is not your heavy use, I got my EVO in Nov and used atk until mid Jan(thanks for setting me right about them) and since I haven't been using one I notice no difference in the performance or battery life on my phone and if you get a whole day out of a stock battery atk or not(I dont care how many apps you kill) you are not a heavy user before I got my 3500 battery I went thru my stock 1500 and 2 1800's almost everyday that's heavy use. And I still only get 12-15 h battery life you will never make me believe that you get the same battery life as a 3500 from a stock battery all thanks to atk. I believe its largely the placebo effect. By the way I use juice defender and under clock my CPU when screen is off (how ever rare that is).

Theres no way you could use 2 1800s like the ones I have in 1 day.  I can turn every setting on (wifi, 4g, max bright, no timeout, etc) and watch movies and my phone will still last me 4 hours.  Nothing you could do could burn 2 batteries like that in one day unless you literally never put your phone down the entire day and are streaming media every idle second.  My battery drops about 1-2% an hour while idle, even while syncing all my apps and receiving texts and calls.

Just sayin...

And I never said I get longer life from atk, I just said it obviously isn't hurting my battery life.  I also never said I went all day on stock battery under heavy use.  I have an 1800mah battery.

Not true I've had a 3500 for 4 days now and it only last me about 15 hours and the difference between a 1500mah and 1800mah battery is small.

I can very easily burn through my 3500 mAh in a relatively short period of time (six hours or less), just by wiping and flashing new ROMs, kernels and other assorted goodies, then having to set everything back up again.

Task killers easily kill more battery than they save. Not even a contest.
