I was searching online and on the forum but really couldn't find a straight answer to my question and issue. I want to know if there's a way I can connect to my pc, with the Evo, over my wifi on my home network? Potentially I would like to be able to access the files on my computer from my Evo, and download them onto the phone...the way that you would be able to do if you had a laptop connected to your home network. I know there are apps that let you stream and/or view your computer and files...like teamviewer, tonido, orblive, sugarsync, etc... But I have not been able to download files onto my phone using those apps. I really want to be able to do this, so any help will be appreciated.

Wow, look at that, which is also listed in the Mega-List of Apps under "Remote Computer/File Access." There's also this thread. All of which were found merely by typing "connect to computer with wifi." Tongue

Personally, I've never had a problem using Orb to access my files, either over wifi or with 3G. You just have to set it up right.

I came across those apps, but some of those apps are "cloud" apps, where u have to upload them to the server and then download them that way. Maybe I worded my question wrong...I want to know if its possible to connect to my pc without using any third party software on the pc? Like I can do when I connect my laptop to the same network as my pc, and am able to transfer files between the pc and laptop without using any third party software, just transferring it over my home network through the router. That's really what I'm asking. The Android WiFi Manager is a good app, but it can only be used from the pc to the phone, u can't use it from the phone to get files off the pc. So does that clarify what I'm asking? Thanks again for ur help.

Nope, Websharing is a direct connection to your PC. So is Orb and Android Manage Wifi.

As far as not having to use 3d party software on your PC, I highly doubt you will be able to find anything. Its pretty much required in order to control back and forth information.

So then there's no way to connect the Evo to a home network the way u can connect two or more computers to a home network, and share files through the network?

Also, websharing and Android WiFi manager do pretty much the same thing. These are great apps to transfer files to and from the phone, but it can only be done from the pc, you can't do it from the phone. Which is what I want to be able to do. So is there a way to do this from the phone, where you can view the files on the phone and download them onto the phone?

Please use the modify or edit functions to edit your previous post if you need to add something rather than posting back to back messages. Thanks.

Actually, I was misremembering since I stopped using it awhile back, but yes, with Websharing, you can connect to your network with your phone just like you do with your USB cable, only using wireless. You have two options, neither of which requires installing anything on your computer or using "cloud" crap. Did you even read my review about it? I go in depth about how to use it.

Also, websharing and Android WiFi manager do pretty much the same thing. These are great apps to transfer files to and from the phone, but it can only be done from the pc, you can't do it from the phone.

Correct. I don't know of any apps that don't require installing something on your PC in order to access the data on it. Even Bluetooth File Transfer, which works great, requires a small app to be installed on your PC. Not sure what the big deal is, though. They are generally very small files, even the Orb stuff.

I did read your review...I guess we're misunderstanding each other. Like I said above, I want to be able to do the transferring from my phone, not only from the pc the way that websharing and android wifi manager only do. I don't have too much of a problem with having an app installed on the pc, but I want to be able to transfer the files onto the phone by using the phone...I don't want to be limited to only be able to transfer the files to the phone through pc. Do you understand me? I don't know if I'm asking the wrong way...but its seems right in my head...

Again, the only thing I can suggest is Orb Live, which you've already shot down. If set up properly, you can access anything on your computer - files, music, videos, whatever.

I'm going to try OrbLive...it just doesn't seem to have too much of a good track record according to the reviews on the market and appbrain. I would've thought there more apps out there that can do this. Thanks

The vast majority of reviews are written by retards who have no idea how to use their phone, how to use the app properly, use apps that aren't for their phones, don't like a font color, etc. Many of the reviews are along the lines of "I can't log in," which isn't an app issue, its 99.999% of the time a user issue.

ALWAYS take them with a grain of salt and look at other statistics as well.  If you look on AppBrain.net, you'll see that OrbLive Free has between 10,000-50,000 downloads and 346 people have reviewed it. The paid version has between 1,000-5,000 downloads with 286 ratings.

I've been using it since September 20th (purchased it 5 days later) and have never had a problem. The only time I haven't been able to access my computer is when I didn't have a strong enough 3G signal to watch videos on. Even then it was still sufficient to stream music, though.

Alright so I'm definitely gonna try  it out and post how it worked out for me.

Good luck.

I will be working on OrbLive today. But I actually found a couple other apps, ES File Explorer and File Expert, that do pretty much what I wanted. I am able to browse my pc and transfer files back and forth right from my phone. I'm still going to look into OrbLive, because with OrbLive I can stream and browse files when I'm away from home. I also read about using an FTP client and setting up an FTP server on my pc...that sounds pretty cool, but not too sure where to start with that. Thanks for the help.

I have been using AndFTP for awhile now and I really like it. However, I connect to an actual server, I don't have my computer set up as one. So can't really advise on how to do that. Smiley Hmm.. now you have me wondering if I could use it to access my computer files as well. I've been having to use either the USB or OrbLive to access my computer. I'll have to look into that. Nice to have other options. Smiley

Yes it definitely seems like something that can be pretty useful and cool. I will be working on setting it up this weekend...will let you know how it goes. Thanks for all your help once again.
