My brother's ancient Sprint phone has the ability to set individual text tones and my Evo 4G can't even do this? Really?

Apparently all you can do is set just one of the default ringtones or a custom one by messing around in the removable disk once it's connected to your computer. Please tell me there is a way to set custom text ringtones for individual people!

ChompSMS doesn't have the feature. Same with the other. Well.. doesn't have the option for it on the Evo 4G, anyway.

So you mean setting individual ringtones? You can do that if the song is on your SD card.

I guess I need to clarify "text" ringtones a little more. Not the sound files you select for playing during a phonecall, but one that plays when receiving a text. You cannot select individual ringtones for texting/SMS, only for phonecalls.

My brother's phone from 2003 has this feature; but it's nowhere to be found in the latest 4G smartphone?

Dont download any app... you dont need it.

All you do is put whatever notification sound file you want into the SD card directory as follows:

SD Card>media>audio>notifcations (place files here)

Voila.

Which is the same info from the other thread.

he wants to set the text notification to ring a different tone for different people, not different tones between call ringer or notification ringer.

I tried ChompSMS and Handcent, and neither worked that well for me.

I downloaded (free) SMS Popup. It lets you customize notifiations, vibrate, etc, for each individual contact. You can still use any messaging app you want. I chose to keep the stock program for now.

I just wish it was like my Palm Pre, where I didn't need all these third-party applications to get all this set up. I feel like I'm wasting CPU/RAM to get a bunch of standard features. Oh well.

It is funny that you say you wish it was like the Palm Pre....when that first released you couldnt even change the stock text message sound for everyone.  Ahhh...brings me back.

What works for me is Ringo Lite. It's free and you can find it in the market. I was pretty bummed too that this feature didn't automatically come with the phone, but whatever, it's still a badass phone.  But yeah, it lets you set different text tones for different people.

Isn't that why you buy a fully customizable phone??? So that when the phone doesn't have something that you need you can download it and put it on there.. Your not wasting CPU/RAM because if it came standard on there it would still take up CPU/RAM but you would just see it as Android system and wouldn't be able to tell that it's taking up more CPU/RAM the only good thing is that if you download a bunch of stuff and later you feel that your using to much CPU/RAM you can uninstall stuff you don't really use to free up CPU/RAM were as if it was standard you couldn't. And what you consider STANDARD to you probably doesn't seem like it should be on some one elses phone. For example take the EVO how it has Facebook and Flickr, Twitter standard, to me I don't really care about that stuff to me that stuff should be something you download from the market not already on the phone but that's just me and I'm able to download anything I think I need that's not there standard.

I not sure if this is the same thing or not and I'm fairly new but when you add a contact it has the option to set a ringtone for that contact.  As far as the ringtones I took a bunch from my other phone and put them in a folder on the phone in the root drive it automatically found them.  Cool but disturbing.
