To keep political discussions from outnumbering everything else, this would be a good place to have a political discourse without driving others nuts. Smiley  If anyone sees fit to move existing political threads here, that would be cool.

Sounds good on paper but I may still find it favorable to post on a specific topic when it comes up, even given the nature of politics, but I will try using this thread too and see where it goes.

I have to agree with Khassy, that if you look at the off-topic forum, it is overrun by political threads.  Now, while some of us like political scraps, a lot of folks are turned off by it.  It's easy to get engrossed in this stuff and lose sight that we've got "topic sprawl".

By the way, you can change the title within a thread to differentiate things within a thread.  I did it with this reply.

A small update here, while off topic is off topic, when most of the threads become political, it is best that we make a place exclusively for politics.

That is in the works right now.

Fascinating.

Until that happens...

Quote
The House of Representatives, led by a majority of Republicans, voted 234-192 today to extend the payroll tax cut and speed the process for government approval of the controversial Keystone XL oil pipeline.
However, approval by the Senate appeared unlikely given strong opposition from the Democratic majority.
President Obama has said he would veto the measure, which attaches pipeline approval to the payroll tax cut, setting up further brinkmanship before Congress’ holiday recess begins at the end of the week.
Congress had been debating the payroll tax cut extension and a spending bill that must pass in order to keep the government funded after Friday and avoid a shutdown.

When will Congress stop this bull crap of bundling unrelated issues into the same bill?  This nonsense of you want that, I want this, so you can't have that unless you vote for this, is total garbage.  Come to think of it, so are many of the rules which permit a minority to thwart a majority.  I don't care which party is doing it.

Two different points.

1st is valid. Usually BS to attach riders to necessary bill. Can you say pork?

Question is what are they suppose to do when WH has vowed to kill essential energy source (coal), squanders billions on fly by night schemes, and openly declarers that he will intact laws to insure our energy costs skyrocket (his term)?

2nd isn’t. Believe that’s why Constitution was constructed so as to prevent majority from changing rules and legislating minority out of existence.

All bills should stand alone.

Filibuster and cloture rules are stumbling blocks to representative government.

I think the inability to compromise has made the two party system no longer viable.  Perhaps a three party or one party system... Shocked Huh? Tongue

Every time I turn my head congress is taking a recess. Interesting.

Also, a legitimate third party that takes a balanced view does seems like a good idea in some ways, would be able to get things done with all these dead locks, but I think ultimately the third party would grow to side one way or the other and eventually make it so anything that one party votes on is sure to pass every time. Then it would be the same as one party, and when the president vetos something, getting that two thirds wouldn't be as difficult.

Would be nice if someone had the testicular fortitude to attempt to vote down that five percent COLA every year to simply staying with the market, as well as try to pass something that states that if congress passes anything against portions of govt subsidized health care, the voting congress members need to remove that proportion of their own free health care for life.

Unfortunately we are now a nation of professional politicians.

The saying “Little Billy, you too can grow up to become president” is still possible if:

You are

Of the right genetic makeup
Have a mediocre political background
Can read extremely well
Are good looking
Sound sincere
And most importantly – are the one the media wants - so they will not expose or continusaly sensationalize any aspect of your career, beliefs, or background that may in any way be harmful to your campaign.

TRANSLATION:  You can't win if you are seen as  a pandering to the billionaires, dishonest, corrupt CONservative, even if you are wearing a $3000, expertly tailored suit.

Or, in the case of the last presidential election, if you are seen as a doddering old apologist for the Bush administration, with a screeching harpy for a running mate.

Very, very, very true. Thanks for making my point for me. The operative words you used were “You can't win if you are seen” and more importantly “seen”. Who determines what information people receive and base their judgments on?

The media.

Who presented us with a community organizer with extremely questionable credentials (possible fraud, graft, association with terrorists, heroin user, influence pedaling, racially bigoted – please remember Al Capone was only a tax cheat) who lied about his not wanting to run for president even before he took office in DC?

The media.

Who never questioned his background but sent over 20 investigators to Alaska?

The media

Who never explored his proposals but tried to destroy a private citizen who had the gall to question the Messiah?

The media.

So yes, as long as the media wants to determine who we should have as president it will be hard not to be seen as what they want to present you as.
