SOPA Cabana (by Dan Bull)

It is almost certain to pass, but I could be wrong... and not that I'm justifying piracy in any shape, way, or form... and perhaps I'm being paranoid... but I just don't want our internet to become like China's internet, etc, over a stretch of time.

It wouldn't have come to this if a lot of snot-nosed kids and freeloaders hadn't decided that because things could be stolen on the internet, it was ok to do so.

From a security standpoint, I say that it is imperative that a means be in place to deny  network access to hostiles.  If hackers in China, want to go after government sites, cut them off.  cut the whole of China off, for all I care.  (Although I have to admit I'm amazed that US government "secure" sites are on public networks.)  I don't want Iranian sleepers to be able to communicate with their control.

As for "world control", if we're doing the controlling, it is fine with me.  The internet is like a frontier town...chaotic.  It's time to put a lid on it.

Personally, I think freedom of speech is one of the last things we have left that give us the ability to make anything happen in a country where the corruption goes knees deep all the way to the top.

So I guess guess it comes down to supporting censorship as long as it stops piracy, or continue to fight against it and keep the internet open.

I think it's painfully obvious that freedom of speech is worth more than potential loss of profit. Furthermore what is being presented (only the censorship portion, not the piracy portion, which I have no problem with, I don't like piracy) is clearly unconstitutional, as if that made a difference.

Freedom of speech can be looked at from different points of view.  Does freedom of speech permit you to publish what you do not own the rights to?  Does freedom of speech permit you to  publish state secrets?  Does freedom of speech permit you to publish the plans to construct a thermonuclear device? Does freedom of speech permit you to violate the privacy of others?

Basically, I feel that if you are causing so much mental anguish to someone through your words that it becomes physical pain, that should be considered assault and treated as such. Those cases are few and far between but they do exists and are almost always overlooked and not taken seriously. Really, it pisses me off when people hide behind the protection of the law and then barrate someone to physical pain and stress and don't care because they're not physically touching you. Cowards is what they are, not wanting to take responsibility for their actions.

So in short, your freedom of speech would end when it causes physical pain.

Publishing things that you don't have permission to, that's a very gray area. It's easy to say bob invented the color red so anything made in red awards bob royalties, but it becomes complicated when frank invents the color maroon and claims it's different than red even though they're similar. As far as direct transcript being published without permission, that is intellectual theft and should be treated as such.

As far as freedom of speech violating privacy, that is also a very gray area. Things like freedom of the press make things complicated and bothersome. Obviously freedom of speech isn't a factor if you break into my home. But what if you get up in my face and I don't know you, or if you write an article and have proof of something I said not thinking anyone heard me, or took my picture but didn't do anything with it? It just gets messier and messier, so I don't have a straight answer for you on that one.

All I can do is fall back on that unless your freedom of speech is causing my physical/extreme mental pain AND it's directed at me (not to be confused with an emaciated bum talking to himself in a dank ally as you pass him, someone preaching to a crowd on a public street corner, etc) then I don't see a reason to silence you in any way.

Let's be clear though, if everyone was so civil, we would not need nearly as much policing and would rather respect each other and try to cadre to others' preferences if it wasn't an inconvenience. But since that's nowhere close to reality, I'm just explaining some of the technicalities in my opinion.

Words do not cause physical pain.

How about publishing things that are true, but obtained illegally, such as the British tabloids did?  How about publishing instructions to build an IED?  How about publishing a link where warez or copyright material?

Mental state resulting in physical discomfort induced by exercising 1st is an interesting question.

Father looks at protestors at funeral and has heart attack.

Person throws up or faints while driving when presented with large (6ft x 8ft) pictures of late term abortions (very much favored by anti-abortion group in Rockford

First example:  speech is protected.  Speaker charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Second example:  Speech is protected.  Speaker charged with assault.

In both cases, the charges would be difficult to prove.  In both cases, civil penalties may apply.

There will never be a comprehensive freedom of speech law until we can legislate respect and common sense.

Words do not cause physical pain.

Perhaps for everyone else, doesn't apply to me and I'd wager some others as well. When I have a serious conflict with someone I get what I might call anxiety attacks and I have physical chest pains and it becomes harder to breath. Is is their fault that I have that condition? Nope. But it is different if they harassing me and I am trying to escape the situation but cannot.

You need an attitude adjustment.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil.  For I am the meanest SOB in the valley.

Speak softly and be heavily armed. wink
