Quote from article:

"Sprint does offer a variety of partner applications that are optimized for use on our wireless phones," a Sprint representative wrote in an e-mail. "From time to time, we will provide new apps to our customers in conjunction with a software maintenance release. Also, Sprint, in conjunction with Google, is taking steps to develop a technical solution that would allow customers to remove any unwanted applications that have been preloaded or pushed in an over-the-air software update." That'll be nice, but its odd that a writer that specializes in "internet security and privacy" just noticed the bloatware apps "a few days ago" (as of May 26th) and that she just found out they "were downloaded onto my phone during a firmware update late last year." Not much of an "internet security and privacy" reporter, eh wot?

I wonder if this will affect the amount of people rooting their phones just to remove the bloat?

Sure it will. Why go through the trouble and void the warranty if you don't need to?

ROMS!  Smiley

But seriously when I rooted my Hero the first time I only wanted to remove the bloatware.  I wasn't concerened at all with roms or kernals and was scared s*#tless I was going to eff up something.  I had it over a year before I just said the hell with it and rooted it, my Evo on the other hand was rooted before I even got home from the store.  Wink

... people rooting their phones just to remove the bloat?

Those people aren't interested in ROMs. Tongue

I wasn't either until I really read the rooting section of this and the developer's forums.  Then, I've been going ROM crazy since I rooted.  I really need to stop going to bed at 3 am.......... Grin

It was nice to be able to uninstall NASCAR and such from my 3VO.  I think the actual room it was taking up was minimal, it probably would download the app on first use is my guess.  If I am correct, there are a few that cannot be removed, like Spider Man.

Funny.  That is always the one app that everyone seems to get rid of (or want to get rid of) first.
