Does anyone have any information about Ice Cream Sandwich?

When it will be released?
What carriers will get it?
which phones will get it?

Its not Sprint that updates them, its HTC. Tongue However, seeing as how the list includes the 3D but not the original Evo 4G, it leaves the question as to whether only new units will receive the updates for awhile or if they all will.

I heard that they might not have it available at all for our evo 4g's because they are discontinuing it all together. I don't see why they would continue to work on our OS because its  not being manufactured anymore. I can see them furthering the 3d, design and other htc phones OS's that just came out because well...there not obsolete anymore lol sad to say. Though I could and hope I am wrong.  Cry

Not releasing on the EVO 4G would be sad.  Most of us bought this when it was really new to the market and aren't even at our 2 year contract end.

@bsnickles ... indeed it will be sad and it looks like that's what's going to happen. They're going to release Ice Cream Sandwich for the Evo 3D and the Evo Design but not the EVO 4G.  I've still got about 9 months left on my contract and I think it's a bit ridiculous that the support lifespan for the Evo 4G was so short.  Even if I was out of contract, I don't like the new Evos because the screens are smaller and it doesn't have a kickstand, which I use a TON.  Unless HTC comes out with an EVO or other phone with a big screen like the original EVO 4G I'll probably go with the Galaxy S II just because it still has a big screen.

I wouldn't count out an ICS update for the 4G until they definitively say it's not going to happen.  The 4G has a pretty impressive track record as far as updates go, but you have to keep in mind the phone is a year and a half old.

And actually, both the Evo and the Evo 3d have 4.3" screens.  The aspect ratios are different which makes it seem that the 3d screen is smaller.  It's a little narrower, but it's also a little taller than the original.

I would say that our Evo 4G's wont be getting the update, as it would be spending money on a dead device in the eye's of HTC.
With that being said you can always root, and then flash a ICS rom and bam! Your Evo will have ICS.  Actually they are 4 to 5 ICS rom's available right now, yes they are a little buggy, but its still early in the development stages.

Evo 4G is still for sale on the website for $99.99. Same price as the 3D and Design. Doesn't look like it;s dead to me.

I think there’s a misconception about what obsolescence means. HTC not updating the OS does not necessarily make it obsolete. Sprint discontinuing the 4G at some point will not make it obsolete either. The device is not obsolete until the user has no use for it anymore. Once apps come out that cannot run on the device that you want or need is when obsolescence starts to creep in.

I do not currently root my 4G because have no great need to and keeping it stock makes updating the phone as simple as clicking on a button in the OTA alert. However, if HTC stops updating the OS then I will probably root as long as there are new ROMs out in the wild with ICS or whatever the next great OS update will be after that.

Once the 4G can no longer be updated by using ROMs on the rooted device then I’ll probably look at upgrading. I’ve had the 4G for a year and a half and it still looks brand new. Can’t even think about replacing it yet!

I have to agree.. this is the best phone i have ever owned and although the latest and greatest are out now they arent that much better than our beloved 4G. If that time comes and I get bored with it or there aren't any more updates then I will root and use something different. Keeps it fresh enough for me to enjoy for a while  Smiley
